Day Skipper Practical Course

What a great way to start skippering a yacht

* Your own cabin
* Full Board
* Top quality fresh food
* State of the art wet weather gear
* No hidden extra charges

* Award winning Instructors

This 5 day course, 2 weekends (2 day + 3 day) or 5 days, living full board on a yacht, equips you with the skills to skipper a charter boat or one of your own.

It is recommended that you have some sailing experience and have completed the Day Skipper theory course before undertaking this practical course.

The course is great fun and gives you the opportunity to visit new ports and harbours.

We provide everything you need for the course including excellent wet weather clothing and comprehensive safety equipment, including fully automatic lifejackets with lifesavers.

With only three students on our 8-berth boats you will have a cabin all to yourself, ensuring a comfortable environment for all crew members aboard for the duration of the course.  With the 3:1 student to Instructor ratio you will get plenty of teaching time and a great learning experience.

With just 3 students on board an 8-berth boat you will have a great experience, and a cabin all of your own.  Join the boat the evening before the course starts to meet your crew mates and instructor.  After discussing the plan for the week over a cup of tea, it is heads down ready for the adventure to begin.

We put into practice all you learnt during the RYA theory course.

Preparation for sea, deck work, navigation, pilotage, meteorology, rules of the road, maintenance and repair work, engines, victualling, emergency situations, yacht handling under power, yacht handling under sail, passage making, night cruising.

What about the weather?

It is unusual for us to have to cancel a course due to bad weather but, should this happen, a full refund or rescheduling will be arranged.  We will do our best to ensure you have a great sailing and learning experience.

We endeavour to supply as much of what you need as possible. We supply pillows – but not pillow cases. We supply wet weather gear – but not footwear.

So here is a guide as to what you might bring:

  • A sleeping bag
  • A pillowcase
  • A personal torch
  • A towel
  • Any essential medication
  • Please ensure you have plenty of warm clothing, bearing in mind that it is colder out on the water and you may get wet
  • A pair of non-marking deck shoes or trainers
  • Non-slip/non-marking waterproof sailing boots. These can be bought in most chandlers for about £42 [optional] (available here and delivered to the boat)
  • Sailing gloves [optional] (Available here)
  • Waterproof clothing (unless you have asked us to provide it)
  • Notebook, pen and pencil
  • Sunscreen, sunhat and sunglasses / warm hat, gloves
  • RYA logbook (highly recommended). We can provide one for you at £6.99.
  • Passport if doing a Coastal Skipper course or a Channel Hop

  • PASSPORT PHOTO for Day Skipper / Coastal Skipper candidates with name and date of birth on reverse

Pack your gear in a soft bag or holdall, i.e. not a hard suitcase, as stowage on board is limited.  We provide all safety equipment such as lifejackets and harnesses etc.
