The Caledonian Canal certainly is a special experience! With views such as these from on deck there is little to compare it to, and in Leg 3 of the Round Britain our crews are able to take in every bit of it.

This leg sums up what our cruise is all about. The exceptional engineering of the Thomas Telford designed lock staircase at Fort Augustus, and the ever-impressive Neptune’s Staircase – dwelling under the looming Ben Nevis – at Fort William, provide the opportunity for novices simply to spend time on a yacht to see what it is all about. The open waters of Loch Ness and Loch Lochy present the thrill of cruising under sail that we all grow to love.

Experience tells us that those who have chosen to join us on this leg, often with no yachting experience whatsoever, often come back again and again. And with views such as these to wake up to every morning who can blame them!

Stunning!

A big thank you to our skipper Andy for these remarkable drone shots!

The first leg of the 2022 drew to a close at Royal Quays Marina with all three crews meeting for a meal together in the marina club house.

With the boats refuelled and restocked with fresh food, our new crew members joined us ready to embark on the second leg of the cruise, traversing the Scottish coastline to inverness. After a couple of short hops northward they all make it safely to Arbroath for a well-earned rest.

We must say a very big thank you to Bruce Fleming, the harbour master at Arbroath who, as well as being extremely welcoming and helpful to all three of our yachts, gave us a discount on our mooring fees, meaning even more money is being donated to Macmillan.

Leaving Lowestoft in the early hours, our three yachts embark on the longest stage of their sail up the east coast, heading for the stunning Yorkshire town of Whitby.

There is something about the view of Whitby from out at sea that is simply stunning. The harbour is safely nestled away at the bottom oh huge cliffs, in the shadow of the ruined monastery that inspired Bram Stoker to write ‘Dracula’, and from here that is no surprise!

But what our crews are most grateful for after a long overnight sail is Whitby’s reputation for some of the finest fish and chips in the country, and the restaurants do not disappoint!

It’s that time of year again!

After weeks of planning and preparation, Premier Sailing’s multiple award-winning sail4macmillan Round Britain cruise, in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support, has begun.

Galliver II, as seen by the crew of Monet

After setting sail from our new base in Burnham Marina on bank holiday Monday Galliver II, Florence Agnes II and Monet made for their first overnight stop at Shotley. On Tuesday morning, following a hearty breakfast on board, our crews depart for their second day at sea. With fair winds, they are making good progress along the east coast, with speeds of 7-8 knots across the water and smooth seas making for a pleasurable sail northward to the Royal Norfolk and Suffolk Yacht Club in Lowestoft.

After leaving Padstow, the cruise sets out to round the westernmost point of England, Land’s End. This famous landmark is a highlight of the Cornish peninsula, and a sight best enjoyed from the water. Sailing gifts us views that are uniquely spectacular, and the thrill of rounding points such as this is incredible.

Our crew’s continue along the Cornish coast until they reach their overnight stop of Penzance, and maybe pop ashore for a cream tea or two!

Leg 6 of the sail4macmillan Round Britain cruise sees Monet, Florence Agnes II and Galliver II leave Cardiff and head for the Cornish port town of Padstow. This stretch of the Bristol Channel is a delight to sail, and the waters are home to an amazing variety of marine life, especially porpoises and dolphins.

As you can see in the video below, the weather was perfect. For those joining the yachts for the first time this leg is a great introduction to cruising under sail, and the week is just getting started!

After a good rest, our vessels and crews depart the Northern Irish port of Bangor and set sail back across the Irish sea heading for Cardiff. These crossings are a daunting prospect however our crews took them in their stride, and soon they were skimming the waves with the wind behind them. Even long, overnight sails are a joy when the weather is this fine!

As they cross the sea on their way to Bangor, our crews pass the magnificent island of Ailsa Craig. The island has previously been a haven for Roman Catholics during the Scottish Reformation and a smuggler’s hiding place, as well as providing the granite for curling stones. Now it also features as the backdrop to our vessels departure from Scotland as they venture westward across the waters of the Irish sea, proudly flying the flag for Macmillan.

You can't beat a good brew at the helm!

As leg 5 of the sail4macmillan Round Britain cruise gets under way, our vessels set off to cross the Irish sea, heading for Bangor. Each leg of the cruise brings its own set of unique challenges, and this is no exception: one of the longest open water crossings of the whole trip.

That is all still to come, as first our crews need to traverse a little more of the stunning Scottish coastline down to Troon, before embarking on their overnight sail across the sea.

After leaving port at Oban, our yachts made their way along the Sound of Mull to the Hebridean Isle of Mull and its capital, Tobermory, home to one of Scotland’s most famous distilleries!

With another exhilarating sail behind them, it was time for our crews to relax in front of an open fire and reminisce over their experiences of the cruise so far. Although the skies were a little cloudier than they had been, the painted houses of Tobermory village certainly brightened everyone’s spirits, ready to set out again tomorrow.
